THE BEVERLY CHAMPMAN STORYBiography-Drama Produced by: Jeff Maynard Written by: Jenni Gold Directed by: TBD
The Beverly Chapman Story is filled with laughter and joy, as well as pain and frustration. It is not another "disease of the month" movie about a courageous "Poor thing." It is not about a weak person or a "super cripple" who goes through life with a smile on her face. It is about a human being who felt the sting of discrimination and who then became a fighter and a leader in the civil-rights movement for 53 million Americans with disabilities. While Beverly received numerous awards and accolades during her lifetime, her accomplishments were brought to national attention when she was named Disabled American of the Year in 1989. Upon receiving that honor, Beverly not only urged every one of us to question our own complacency, but indeed offered all people a challenge: "become complete and total participants in life!" Ironically what ended Beverly's life wasn't her disability. Her death was related to the highly controversial health care issue. That issue, one that disabled American's feel strongly about, is government provided attendant care. People have been known to chain their wheelchairs together in protest because for some, attendant care can be the difference between a productive independent life or a nursing home existence. In Beverly's case, it came down to life and death! The attendant care issue gives The Beverly Chapman Story a life and a mission of its own. Beverly died prematurely and her work is not yet done. Through this film she will bring another issue to light and maybe change the world for the better. Thus, she will continue her fight to help others get the most out of life. Beverly states it best: "My fight was to insure that future generations of disabled Americans would have no barriers to restrict them from going anywhere and doing anything. And I was successful not because I was strong, but because I was right."
